Our Story

The Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution

The Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution (FfAME) is a non-profit scientific research organization dedicated to expanding the limits of molecular science. We combine the traditions of natural history and physical science, blending expertise across chemistry, biology, genetics, and planetary science.

Our scientists pioneered the field of synthetic biology and continue to lead by generating novel molecular systems—such as Artificially Expanded Genetic Information Systems (AEGIS)—that are foundational to our work across three core areas:

Synthetic Biology & DNA Technology: We design and create new-to-nature molecules capable of storing information, evolving, and supporting artificial proteins. This innovation drives the development of next-generation diagnostics, medical therapeutics, and biotechnology.

Origin of Life & Astrobiology: We conduct fundamental research on how life originated on Earth and are actively involved in the search for life elsewhere in the Solar System, including the development of agnostic life-detection technologies.

Translational Research: We apply our molecular evolution and computational biology expertise to practical challenges in Medical Genomics and Paleogenetics, leading to advancements in human health, enzyme design, and systems biology.

At FfAME, we believe that the future of molecular science depends on bold ideas, rigorous experimentation, and a willingness to rethink what is possible. Our mission is to transform groundbreaking concepts into technologies that benefit human health, enable new industries, and expand the boundaries of evolution itself.
